Giving back to the community is an important part of doing business. Akridge & Akridge Chiropractic is directly involved in the community, through business networking groups and local Chambers of Commerce. Our fund-raiser “thermometer” hanging in our waiting area shows our progress in meeting our next fund-raising goal.

Our staff is preparing for two important community events coming up soon. They are:

  • The Omaha Health Expo, April 12-13 at the Centurylink Center in Omaha. We’ll have a booth set up at the expo, which is the largest health expo in the region. In addition to seeing Dr. Craig and Dr. Lacey, you can hear from experts on ways to improve your lifestyle, live longer, feel better and be happier. More information: http://showofficeonline.com/OmahaHealthWellnessFitnessExpo.html
  • The 2014 Heart Walk for the American Heart Association. This will be held May 10 at Miller’s Landing in downtown Omaha. Akridge & Akridge Chiropractic is putting together a team of walkers for this fun and important event. If you’d to walk with us, please call Jennifer at 402-884-4774. We even have shirts you can purchase!

Please keep checking our blog, Google Plus page and Facebook page for updates on fund-raising and other community events throughout the year.

Olympian Tomasevicz endorses chiropractic care

Curt TomaseviczSome know Curt Tomasevicz from his days as a Nebraska Cornhusker running back and linebacker. More recently, sports fans around the world know him for his participation on the bronze medal-winning 2014 U.S. Olympic bobsled team.

Chiropractors in the state also know Tomasevicz in his role as a spokesman for the Nebraska Chiropractic Association. Tomasevicz mentions chiropractic care when talking about training for football and the Olympics. In a March 6 interview with Huskers Sports Network,  Tomasevicz talked about how chiropractic care helped his entire bobsledding team.

“Our sport is very violent,” he said. “It’s really hard on the body. Chiropractic care has been a great asset for me as well as my teammates.  . . . That’s how we can make a career (in bobsledding) last 10 years. That’s kind of rare.”

Tomasevicz’ belief in chiropractic care began before the Olympics, though. When he decided in 2004 to train with the U.S. bobsled team, his hometown of Shelby, Neb. raised $26,000 to support him. A chiropractor and physical therapist also contributed their services.

Now that the Olympics are over, Tomasevicz said he’s trying to decide which way to turn next. He’d like to find a career that uses his degree in engineering, but he’d also like to use his sports knowledge as well.

“I can’t imagine a better feeling than the feeling we had with my teammates just a couple weeks ago,” he said in the interview. “That was pretty epic, coming away with the bronze medal in that type of race.

Chiropractic is more than just aligning your spine to relieve pain.

Proper chiropractic care involves educating patients on how to take care of their backs and necks, and maintaining alignment to prevent pain and deterioration over time.

That’s where Jenn Jorgensen comes in. As the practice representative for our clinic, Jenn travels to businesses and meetings to explain our philosophy of chiropractic care.

She also does health and wellness screenings and talks about “How to Stay Young.”

Jenn spoke today to her colleagues in TIPS Group No. 1 for the Sarpy County Chamber. She also demonstrated a spinal screen and gave them information about our office.

If you’d like Jenn to speak to your group or come out to your office for a wellness screening or lunch and learn, please give her a call at (402) 877-4774. She’d be happy to help!

Two new employees join Akridge staff

Akridge & Akridge Chiropractic welcomes two new employees to its staff.

Bailey Morrison

Bailey Morrison, 19, joined the staff in October 2013 as a chiropractic assistant. She had been a patient since August, and when an opening came up, she applied.

As a chiropractic assistant, Bailey helps set people up on their STEM treatments and remove the connections. She also helps with work at the front desk, cleaning, and other duties as needed.

“This is such a laid-back job,” Bailey said. “It’s like a family. We all work really well together. It’s such a comfortable environment to be in.”

Angie Rodriguez

Angie Rodriguez, 27, is the new receptionist at Akridge & Akridge Chiropractic. She joined the staff in early February 2014.

Angie said she has always enjoyed working in the medical field. She got her start by filling in for a friend at a physical therapy office, and her career took off from there. In May, she will celebrate her 10th anniversary of working with chiropractors.

Her biggest adjustment in her new role is working with Apple computers, she said. “The rest is very familiar.”

Angie says the best part about her new job is the positive environment. “Everyone is so fun, and we help each other out. I am happy to work here. I love what I do.”

Kathy Edison, the previous receptionist, is still on staff. She is now handling insurance claims and questions for the office.

Why children need chiropractic care

Many people think chiropractic care is for adults who’ve developed back pain or other problems over the years. But even the youngest of infants can benefit from chiropractic.

In her article “Why Should Children Have Chiropractic Care?”, Jeannie Ohm, D.C.,  explains that the birthing process can put stress on an infant’s developing spine and nervous system. This stress can contribute to a number of common health problems for newborns, such as colic, breathing problems, nursing difficulties, sleep disturbances, allergic reactions and chronic infections.

As newborns grown and learn to sit up, crawl stand and walk, gentle adjustments will help toddlers recover from the bumps and tumbles that accompany their new steps.

Dr. Ohm notes that treatments are adapted to manage children’s needs. “Chiropractic adjusting procedures are modified to fit a child’s size, weight, and unique spinal condition. They are both gentle and specific to the child’s developing spinal structures,” she said.

Drs. Craig and Lacey Akridge can adjust your children with the gentle touch needed to keep them healthy and happy. Please call us at 402-884-4774 if you have any questions, or to set up appointments for the whole family.
